Abstract

This article is a study of the role of Arabic, Bugis culture, and interpretive literacy in the development of Islamic culture in the Bugis community. By identifying some Arabic vocabulary absorbed into the Bugis language, it will be seen its influence. In addition to being a language that is very rich in its vocabulary and literary height, Arabic is also supported by the position of the Qur'an and Hadith as the primary source of Islamic teachings. The spread of Islam to various regions, especially in South Sulawesi, made local people know Arabic. The Bugis language has adapted many Arabic and Islamic terms. With the entry of Islam in Sulawesi, Indonesia had a major influence on the Bugis-Makassar culture. The inclusion of sara' in the Pangadereng system as a living system of the Bugis community has had a lot of influence on the development of Islamic culture for the Bugis community. This is what is known as al-'urf as one of the considerations for the formation of Islamic law. In addition, the writing of Bugis translation and exegesis makes Lontarak a medium for explaining the Qur'an. Although Islam is not identical with the Bugis as much as Islam is not identical with Arabia, Islam and the Bugis have many similarities, so Islam is easily accepted by the Bugis people.
